Practical Education

 Education Starts At Home

An Important Phrase
I heard an important phrase once from a very important person through whom my life has been shaped into what it is today (I am still growing though). The statement was that - education is the process of pulling out what is already in a person. This to me made a lot of sense seeing that we are all born with things locked up in us that are just waiting to be harvested.

Many would highlight the importance of education and how it prepares a person to participate in the world and the marketplace. Others refer to the necessary skills and knowledge that is gained through education. Yet others would point out the development of the person through the process of education. These take place through either formal or informal education.

Today's Education System
The current education system today is aimed at preparing people for the marketplace - giving them tools and skills which they would need in the competitive world. Although the formal way of education is aimed at knowledge and skills, I appreciate the informal way of education where I have been taught values that formed the basis for my formal education.

Education starts at home
There is a very valuable lesson taught in the Bible in Deuteronomy 11:19.
"Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up."

This here shows the importance of teaching principled values which do not flow out of an educational institution or system but point to the responsibility of parental guidance. Education, therefore, starts at home.
